I’m very much obsessed with tangerines at the moment. I was trying to think of ways to incorporate them into a recipe when a post-workout protein packed smoothie came to mind! For those of you who know me, you know I don’t do or encourage protein powders or supplements. Protein should come from food, and Greek yogurt is one of the best sources of vegetarian protein. The addition of vanilla Greek yogurt into this smoothie gives a delicious Creamsicle taste.
Although flavored yogurts are a bit high in sugar, this smoothie is the perfect indulgence after a long work-out when the body needs to replenish its stored sugar (called glycogen). The fruit and sugar replace carbohydrates lost during a long endurance work-out, which the body needs to restock for its next work-out. And, an 8-ounce serving of this smoothie contains 7g of protein to aid in muscle repair. Let’s face it, you’re probably going to get more protein by going back for seconds!
Makes 16 ounces (2 cups)
1 seedless tangerine, peeled
½ cup vanilla Greek yogurt
⅔ cup frozen strawberries (about 8 small)
½ cup low-fat milk
½ teaspoon vanilla
Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
- Strawberries have more Vitamin C than oranges and are packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants have been shown to reduce the risk of several serious diseases.
- Tangerines are another great source of Vitamin C for immune health. Select the sweetest tangerines by choosing the ones that are the deepest orange.
